How can I apply for a Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) in Canada?

Are you an International student who is graduating for this coming semester or already graduated? Probably your next question is how can I apply for Post-Graduate Work Permit after my graduation.

Here are a few guidelines on how you can start your Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) application in Canada.

STEP 1: After the release of final grades, you may apply for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) up to 180 days, either inside or outside Canada.

In case your study permit will expire before the release of your school credentials, please apply for a visitor record, or leave Canada, and apply your PGWP outside Canada.

To become eligible, you must satisfy the following:

● Finished your course or program:

  1. At approved designated learning institution (DLI)

  2. At least 8 months duration of the course or program

  3. Obtain certificate courses, degree, diploma

Visit the Government of Canada website for up-to-date information.

Maintained full-time status as a student in Canada

Checked the validity of your passport before application to get the full length of your PGWP permit. To extend the PGWP permit, please apply a paper-based application.

STEP 2: Prepare and scan the following documents:

  1. Passport pages

  2. Official Graduation Letter from your school, college, or university.

  3. Official Transcript or a copy of an unofficial transcript from school, college, or university website.

  4. Valid Study Permit

  1. PGWP Processing Fees: $255 CAN

  2. Processing Time: 90 days (Online /Paper)

STEP 3: Apply for PGWP through IRCC Account.

  1. Create or sign-in on IRCC website

  2. Print the document checklist once you answer the PGWP questionnaires online. Other documents will be requested if needed.

  3. Download and fill out the IMM5710e from the Government of Canada website.

  4. Upload the scanned copies of all documents to the IRCC account.

  5. Finally, submit your completed application.


STEP 4: Submit a Biometric application online after you apply for PGWP.

Fees $85.00 CAN

STEP 5: After you apply for PGWP.

You may continue working, only if you had a valid study permit upon PGWP application, completed your course or program, and you did not exceed on working hours while studying, otherwise you must wait for the release of your PGWP before working.
